OSAKA SIDE STREETS

you want to try something that feels truly local to Osaka, head into the backstreets of Namba and look for Chitose Honten.

This small, old-school restaurant in Namba Sennichimae is famous for one dish: nikusui.

What is Nikusui?

Nikusui is one of Osaka’s lesser-known local specialties.

At first glance, it looks simple — thinly sliced beef, green onions and a soft egg served in a hot, flavorful dashi broth.

But there’s a very Osaka story behind it.

Chitose was originally known for its beef udon. One day, Yoshimoto comedian Hana Kyo came into the restaurant and wanted something lighter to eat. He asked for:

“Beef udon, without the udon.”

The restaurant served it, the unusual order caught on, and nikusui was born.

Today, it has become one of Namba’s classic local dishes.

What to Order

The classic choice is:

Nikusui + Kodama

“Kodama” is Chitose’s small bowl of rice topped with raw egg.

The rich beef and dashi broth with simple egg rice is a combination locals have enjoyed for years.

At Chitose Honten, nikusui is currently ¥900, and Kodama is ¥200.

Why I Recommend It

Takoyaki and okonomiyaki are famous around the world.

Nikusui is different.

It’s the kind of Osaka food you’re more likely to discover by walking through the small streets around Namba and Sennichimae.

Chitose isn’t about luxury or elaborate presentation.

It’s about simple food, local history and a taste of everyday Osaka.

That’s exactly why it’s worth visiting.
